Sahyadria denisonii
Also known as: Denison's Barb, Rose Line Shark, Torpedo Barb, Miss Kerala
Origin: South Asia (India, Kerala)
The Denison's Barb, widely known as the Rose Line Shark due to the brilliant red stripe running through the eye and along the upper lateral line, is one of the most visually stunning cyprinids in the freshwater hobby. The torpedo-shaped body is gleaming silver-white, bisected by a bold black horizontal stripe from snout to tail, above which runs the vivid crimson-red line that gives the fish its common name. The caudal fin is boldly marked with red and black on the upper lobe and yellow on the lower, completing an extraordinary color combination. Native to the fast-flowing, well-oxygenated hill streams and rivers of Kerala and Karnataka in southern India, the Denison's Barb is an active, powerful swimmer requiring large tanks with good current, high oxygen levels, and relatively cool temperatures. It is listed as vulnerable in the wild due to over-collection and habitat loss, though captive-bred specimens are increasingly available. In the aquarium it is peaceful and suitable for large community setups with robust, similarly sized tankmates. Growing to 15 cm and preferring cooler conditions, it requires a dedicated, well-maintained system.
Tank Setup A minimum of 200 liters with a long footprint and strong filtration creating significant current is essential. Use smooth rounded substrate, large stones, and hardy plants or artificial decor that can withstand the current. Good surface agitation ensures adequate oxygenation. Temperature must be kept below 25°C consistently.
Water Parameters pH 6.5–7.5, temperature 15–25°C, general hardness 5–20 dGH. This species requires cooler, well-oxygenated, moderately hard water replicating its native hill-stream environment. Higher temperatures cause stress and shortened lifespan.
Feeding An omnivore that should receive a varied diet of quality pellets, frozen foods, and vegetable matter. Blanched spinach, peas, and zucchini are accepted. Feed twice daily. A balanced diet maintains coloration and health.
Tankmates Peaceful with similarly sized, robust species. Suitable companions include large danios, other barbs, larger loaches, and robust cichlids tolerant of cooler water. Avoid small fish that may be accidentally bumped or stressed by this active species.
Schooling Keep a minimum of six. Solitary individuals are stressed and prone to disease.
Health and Maintenance Vulnerable to high temperatures and low oxygen. Invest in a quality chiller or maintain the tank in a cool room. Weekly water changes of 25–30% with well-oxygenated, temperature-matched water are critical.
