Devario aequipinnatus (longfin strain)
Also known as: Longfin Giant Danio, Veil-tail Giant Danio
Origin: Captive-bred (India/Sri Lanka origin)
The Longfin Giant Danio is a captive-developed variety of Devario aequipinnatus in which all fins are significantly extended, creating a veil-like, flowing silhouette that adds considerable elegance to the species' already striking blue and gold horizontal striping. The colouration is identical to the standard form, and males in peak condition display particularly vivid pigmentation.
In all respects apart from its fin length, the Longfin Giant Danio shares the robust, adaptable nature of the standard form. It is hardy, easy to feed, and peaceful toward community tankmates. The elongated fins should be taken into consideration when selecting tankmates, as boisterous or nippy species may damage the extended fin tissue over time.
For planted community tanks where a larger schooling species is desired, the Longfin Giant Danio provides impressive visual impact. It moves with a graceful undulation quite unlike the rapid, darting movement of the standard-fin form, making it a calmer and more photogenic occupant of larger planted displays.
Water: Temperature 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–20; adaptable and hardy; avoid fin-nipping tankmates to protect extended fins. Tank: Minimum 120 L; ample swimming space; robust planting along perimeter; avoid strong flow that stresses longfin fish. Feeding: Omnivorous; pellets, flake, and frozen foods; varied diet maintains vivid blue and gold colouration. Breeding: Longfin trait heritable; follows standard Giant Danio egg-scattering approach; fry variable in fin length. Compatibility: Peaceful with robust community fish; avoid fin-nippers and very small species that may be intimidated.
