Devario assamensis
Also known as: Assam Danio
Origin: Assam, Manipur, India
Devario assamensis, the Assam Danio, is native to the Brahmaputra drainage in Assam and Manipur, northeast India. It is a medium-large devario displaying the characteristic alternating blue-silver and gold horizontal bands of the genus, which intensify in well-conditioned fish. Its native habitat consists of clear, moderately fast-flowing rivers and streams at low to mid elevations. In the aquarium it is a robust and adaptable species that thrives in groups of five or more. Regular water changes, good filtration, and moderate current are the keys to long-term success. The tank must be tightly covered as the species is a competent jumper. It is completely peaceful toward other fish too large to be swallowed, making it suitable for community aquaria containing medium barbs, larger tetras, and loaches. Feed on a varied diet including flake, pellets, and frozen bloodworm.
Water: Temperature 18–25 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–12; clean water with moderate current. Tank: 80 L minimum; long tank with open central swimming area; tight lid; marginal planting. Feeding: Flake, pellet, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp; accepts most foods. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; large spawning tank; condition on live foods for best results. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium-sized community species; avoid very small nano fish.
