Devario browni
Also known as: Brown's Danio
Origin: Myanmar
Devario browni is an uncommon species in the trade, native to the rivers of Myanmar. Like other large devarios it has an elongated, silvery body with faint iridescent banding and a lively, restless swimming style. It inhabits moderate to fast-flowing rivers and larger streams, and transfers this energy to the aquarium, where it needs plenty of horizontal swimming room. A tank of at least 100 L with robust filtration and a secure cover is essential. The species is completely peaceful despite its size and activity level and can be mixed with comparably sized, non-aggressive fish. It is not particularly fussy about diet and accepts flake, pellets, and frozen foods readily. Relatively rarely encountered in the hobby, it is best sourced from specialist importers.
Water: Temperature 18–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; moderate to strong filtration; well-oxygenated. Tank: 100 L minimum; long layout; tight-fitting lid; open central swimming area. Feeding: Flake, pellet, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp; undemanding. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; rarely bred commercially; needs large conditioning tank. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium and large community fish; boisterous—avoid slow nano species.
