Devario horai
Also known as: Hora's Danio
Origin: Myanmar (Chindwin and Irrawaddy drainages)
Devario horai is a medium-large devario endemic to the Chindwin and Irrawaddy river systems of Myanmar. It displays the attractive alternating blue-silver and gold banding characteristic of the genus, which shows well under good aquarium lighting. Like its close relatives, it is a fast, active schooling fish that requires a spacious aquarium with strong water movement and a tightly fitting lid. It inhabits clear, moderately flowing rivers in its native range. In the aquarium, groups of five or more exhibit impressive coordinated schooling and look particularly striking when allowed sufficient space to move freely. It is peaceful with all fish of similar size and is compatible with medium barbs, larger tetras, and robust loaches. Feed on floating flakes, pellets, and a variety of frozen foods.
Water: Temperature 18–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; moderate to strong flow; well-oxygenated. Tank: 100 L minimum; long tank; open swimming area; planted sides; very secure cover. Feeding: Floating flake, medium pellet, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; rarely bred commercially; condition on live foods prior to attempted spawning. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium to large community fish; may intimidate nano species.
