Devario laoensis
Also known as: Lao Danio
Origin: Laos (Mekong drainage)
Devario laoensis is a slender, silvery devario endemic to Laos, where it inhabits medium to large rivers including sections of the Mekong drainage. The body is streamlined and marked with subtle iridescent horizontal banding that catches the light as the school moves. Though not as commonly available as some relatives, it is a robust and adaptable species in the aquarium, tolerating a range of water conditions provided quality is maintained. It requires a spacious tank of at least 100 L with good filtration and water movement. The species is an active, midwater schooler and a competent jumper, so a secure lid is mandatory. It is peaceful with all similarly sized companions and accepts a broad range of foods. An underrated choice for the aquarist seeking a less standard schooling cyprinid.
Water: Temperature 20–26 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; moderate to good current; clean water. Tank: 100 L minimum; open swimming lanes; planted margins; very secure lid. Feeding: Flake, pellet, frozen bloodworm, daphnia, and brine shrimp; undemanding. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; separate large tank needed; conditioning on live foods advised. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with medium barbs, tetras, and robust loaches.
