Devario shantungensis
Also known as: Chinese Danio, Shantung Danio
Origin: China (northern drainages)
Devario shantungensis, sometimes referenced as the Chinese Danio, is a temperate-adapted devario historically reported from northern China's cooler river drainages. It is one of the few devarios capable of thriving at low temperatures, making it valuable for unheated or cool-water aquaria in temperate climates. The body is silvery with faint blue banding and a streamlined build typical of the genus. In warmer climates it requires a chiller or placement in a cool room during summer. It is a peaceful, active schooling fish that appreciates company of its own kind and mixes well with other temperate cyprinids. Feed on standard small aquarium foods. Though infrequently available, it provides an interesting cool-water option for aquarists who have exhausted the classic white cloud and zebrafish options.
Water: Temperature 14–22 °C, pH 6.5–7.5, GH 5–15; cool water is critical; avoid prolonged warmth. Tank: 80 L minimum; unheated or chilled setup; moderate flow; planted layout. Feeding: Flake, pellet, frozen cyclops, daphnia; good variety supports health. Breeding: Egg-scatterer; cool water and conditioning on frozen foods may trigger spawning. Compatibility: Cool-water only; pairs well with white clouds, temperate loaches, and other Chinese cyprinids.
