Bagarius yarrelli
Also known as: Devil Catfish, Goonch, Bagarius
Origin: South & Southeast Asia (Ganges, Mekong river systems)
Bagarius yarrelli is the largest member of the family Sisoridae, inhabiting boulder-strewn, fast-flowing sections of the Ganges and Mekong river systems. Its flattened body, large pectoral fins, and adhesive thoracic skin help it hold position against powerful currents. A specialist piscivore in the wild, it lies motionless on the riverbed awaiting fish, frogs, and even small mammals that stray within range.
In the aquarium, B. yarrelli demands extremely high dissolved oxygen, a strong directional flow, and a diet of whole fish or large meaty foods. The tank must be enormous — juveniles grow rapidly and adults require public-aquarium-scale systems. Water quality must be pristine; even brief excursions in ammonia or nitrite are poorly tolerated given its rheophilic origins.
Handling is hazardous due to sharp pectoral spines. The Devil Catfish is a species for the most serious specialist keepers only, but few catfish inspire as much awe. Its longevity, intelligence, and sheer physical presence make it a bucket-list species for large-catfish enthusiasts worldwide.
Water: 18–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, very high O₂; powerful directional flow; nitrates below 10 ppm. Tank: 5 000 L minimum; smooth boulders, minimal substrate; very strong circulation pumps. Feeding: Whole freshwater fish, large prawns, earthworms; wean onto large carnivore pellets over time. Breeding: Not recorded in home aquaria; requires river-current simulation and large breeding pools. Compatibility: Strict predator — keep alone or only with species too large to swallow.
