Moenkhausia pittieri
Also known as: Diamond Tetra, Pittier's Tetra
Origin: Venezuela (Lake Valencia basin)
Moenkhausia pittieri, the Diamond Tetra, comes from Venezuela's Lake Valencia basin. Every scale of this fish scatters light differently, creating a dazzling mosaic of diamond-like iridescence across the entire body. Males develop dramatically elongated dorsal, anal, and ventral fins with age. A peaceful, adaptable species that looks extraordinary under good aquarium lighting in a planted aquarium.
Water: 22–26°C, pH 5.5–7.0, soft to moderately hard; not overly demanding. Tank: 80 L minimum; well-planted with open areas; good lighting essential to display iridescence. Feeding: Quality flake, micro-pellets, frozen brine shrimp, bloodworm and daphnia. Behaviour: Peaceful schooling species; keep 8+; males may posture and display fins. Compatibility: Excellent with other soft-water tetras, corydoras, small rasboras and dwarf cichlids.
