Dimidiochromis strigatus
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa (vegetated sandy bays)
Dimidiochromis strigatus is a slender, elongate piscivore from the vegetated shallows and sandy bays of Lake Malawi, where it ambushes prey among aquatic grasses. Males display a striking horizontal black lateral stripe on a silver-blue body, tipped with vivid red-orange fin highlights at breeding condition. An uncommon species that makes an impressive specimen in a large Lake Malawi display aquarium.
Requires a large aquarium (400L+) with open areas and some plant cover (real or artificial). Maintain hard, alkaline Malawi water. Feed meaty foods: large cichlid pellets, frozen fish, prawns, krill. Keep only with fish too large to be eaten — will consume anything it can swallow. Separate from timid Malawi species.
