Cambarellus diminutus
Also known as: Diminutus Dwarf Crayfish, Least Crayfish
Origin: Mississippi, USA
Cambarellus diminutus holds the distinction of being one of the smallest crayfish species in North America, typically reaching only 2.5–3 cm as an adult. It is native to a limited range in southern Mississippi, where it inhabits weedy, slow-moving streams and swamps with dark, tannin-rich water. Its colouration is a subtle mix of grey, brown, and cream, often with a darker dorsal stripe.
Due to its tiny size, C. diminutus is an excellent choice for nano aquaria where other crayfish would be too large and destructive. It is generally gentle toward robust plants and can be kept in lightly planted setups with fine-leaved plants, mosses, and leaf litter. Its small size does mean it can become prey to fish larger than 4–5 cm.
Breeding is achievable in captivity with patient pairs provided with adequate shelter. The female broods a very small clutch of large eggs, and the resulting juveniles are proportionally larger relative to the adult size, making early survival easier than in many dwarf crustaceans.
Water: 18–24°C, pH 6.8–7.8, GH 4–12, KH 1–8; soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic tolerated. Tank: minimum 20 L, fine substrate, dense moss, leaf litter, small caves; avoid large fish. Feeding: micro sinking pellets, spirulina powder, blanched spinach, baby brine shrimp. Breeding: female broods 5–20 large eggs; juveniles independent and tiny — provide dense cover. Compatibility: very small — keep only with peaceful nano fish under 4 cm or invertebrate-only.
