Discosoma sp.
Origin: Indo-Pacific, Caribbean
Discosoma sp. blue mushrooms are among the most beginner-friendly corals in the reef hobby, producing large, flat, brilliant blue disc-shaped polyps that spread across rock surfaces under low to moderate light. They require no special dosing, minimal flow, and tolerate moderate nutrient levels that would stress more demanding corals. Blue mushrooms are particularly attractive under blue-dominant lighting where their colouration becomes most vivid.
Low to medium PAR (20–150) — one of the few corals that actively prefers low light. Gentle flow. Alk 8–10 dKH, Ca 400–450 ppm, temp 24–27°C. Tolerates NO3 up to 25 ppm. Can spread aggressively under high nutrients — monitor and control. Do not expose to strong direct flow. Will detach and move if unhappy. Frag by cutting disc with a sharp blade; each fragment regenerates a new disc. Ideal for shaded, low-flow areas of the reef.
