The iconic Heckel Discus (Symphysodon discus) is considered by many the most beautiful freshwater fish. Wild-caught specimens show the distinctive bold 1st, 5th, and 9th vertical bars on a red-spotted body. Demanding but rewarding for experienced keepers.
Care Guide
Requires very soft, acidic, warm water: pH 5.5–6.5, KH 1–3, 28–32°C. Weekly 25–30% water changes essential. Feed high-protein foods: Discus hamburger, bloodworm, beef heart.
