Paratrygon aiereba
Also known as: Discus Stingray, Curimatá Stingray
Origin: South America
Paratrygon aiereba is native to the Amazon and Orinoco basins and is immediately recognisable by the near-perfect circular shape of its pectoral disc, the widest disc-to-body ratio of any Neotropical stingray. Its mottled brown colouration provides excellent camouflage against sandy riverbeds. It requires the same high-standard specialised care as all freshwater stingrays.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 5.5-7.0, very soft, near-zero nitrogenous waste; strong biological filtration. Tank: Minimum 1000L with very large square or circular footprint to accommodate the wide disc. Feeding: Carnivore; prawns, earthworms, mussel, crustaceans presented on the substrate. Behaviour: Semi-aggressive; venomous tail — absolute caution required during maintenance. Compatibility: Species tank recommended; any tankmates must remain completely clear of the substrate.
