Distichodus Decemmaculatus

Distichodus decemmaculatus is one of the smallest and most aquarium-friendly members of the Distichodus genus, reaching only about 6 cm. Its pale silvery body is adorned with a regular row of dark, evenly spaced spots along the lateral line, giving it a neat and recognisable pattern. Unlike many of its larger relatives, this species is manageable in moderately sized aquariums.

This species inhabits slow-moving, heavily vegetated waters in the Congo basin and appreciates similar conditions in captivity. Dense planting, dim lighting, and soft slightly acidic water will replicate its natural habitat. It is relatively tolerant of live plants compared to larger Distichodus species, though tender-leaved species may still be nibbled.

Distichodus decemmaculatus is an herbivore by preference, readily accepting blanched vegetables, algae wafers, and plant-based flake alongside standard community foods. It is peaceful and suitable for a well-planned African community biotope.

Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–27°C, GH 2–12, KH 1–6. Tank: Minimum 80 L, planted with robust or artificial plants; gentle to moderate flow. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, blanched courgette and spinach, plant-based flake, occasional frozen foods. Breeding: Rarely bred in captivity; egg scatterer in soft acidic water among vegetation. Compatibility: Peaceful with other small African fish; avoid housing with delicate fine-leaved plants.
