Distichodus lusosso
Also known as: Longnose Distichodus, Longsnouted Distichodus
Origin: Congo River system, Central Africa
Distichodus lusosso is one of the larger and more elongate Distichodus species, distinguished by its particularly long, pointed snout used to probe substrate and crevices for plant material and detritus. The adult body is silvery with pronounced dark vertical bars that fade somewhat as the fish matures. This species can reach 40 cm in well-maintained captive conditions.
Housing D. lusosso appropriately requires a tank of at least 400 litres with robust filtration and moderate current. Like other large Distichodus species, it is destructive toward live plants and is best kept in aquariums decorated with driftwood, rock, and artificial or very tough plants. Despite its size, it is generally peaceful with large, non-competing species.
Distichodus lusosso is a resilient and long-lived species that responds well to a plant-rich diet supplemented with algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and quality herbivore pellets. It is a rewarding species for the committed large-tank African aquarist.
Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Minimum 400 L with strong filtration, driftwood, rock, and artificial plants only. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, blanched courgette, spinach, herbivore pellets, and spirulina flake. Breeding: Not commonly bred in home aquaria; large scale with seasonal triggers required. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust fish; incompatible with soft plants or very small tankmates.
