About

Juvenile Distichodus sexfasciatus are among the most visually striking of all African fish sold in the hobby. At small sizes their bodies are a brilliant orange-red overlaid with six sharp black vertical bars, making them look almost like a painted ornament in the aquarium. This colouration gradually transitions to a more subdued silver-grey as the fish grows toward its potential 40 cm adult size.

Buyers should be aware that D. sexfasciatus grows large and requires an eventual upgrade to a very spacious aquarium. It is also a confirmed plant destroyer and will consume and uproot virtually all live vegetation. Artificial plants and hardscape-only aquascapes are the only realistic long-term options. It is best kept in groups as juveniles, which moderates individual aggression.

Despite the future space commitment, juvenile D. sexfasciatus are hardy, adaptable feeders that accept most foods. Starting with a herbivore-focused diet from the outset establishes good feeding habits for the long term.

Care Guide

Water: Soft to moderately hard, pH 6.0–7.5, temperature 23–28°C, GH 2–15, KH 1–8. Tank: Start at 150 L for juveniles; adults require 500+ L; no live plants; robust hardscape only. Feeding: Herbivore; algae wafers, blanched vegetables, herbivore pellets, and plant-based flake. Breeding: Not achieved in home aquaria; large commercial ponds with seasonal simulation required. Compatibility: Peaceful with large robust species; will destroy any live plants; grows very large.
