Distichodus sexfasciatus is a large and striking African fish with vivid red and black vertical banding on an elongated body. Found in rivers and floodplains of the Congo Basin, it is a herbivore that grazes on aquatic vegetation and organic matter. Best suited to large Congo biotope setups with robust or no plants.
Requires very large aquariums — at least 400 L for adults. Feed vegetables, blanched zucchini, algae wafer, and plant-based pellets. Will eat any live plants; use plastic or robust plants like Anubias. Best in a Congo biotope with large driftwood. Social; keep in groups.
