About

The Dogtooth Cichlid is one of the most widely kept mbuna species, appreciated for its manageable size and bold colouration. It inhabits the upper rocky zones of Lake Malawi where it grazes algae and picks invertebrates. Males are territorial and must be managed carefully with appropriate female ratios to prevent aggression.

Care Guide

Water: 24-27°C, pH 7.8-9.0, hard alkaline water; weekly water changes of 25-30%. Tank: Minimum 150L; dense rockwork with many caves and crevices to establish territories. Feeding: Spirulina-based pellets and algae wafers; supplement with frozen mysis occasionally. Behaviour: Males are territorial and aggressive; keep one male to 3-4 females or use all-male display tanks. Compatibility: Mbuna community; mix with species of similar size and temperament.
