About

Rhinodoras dorbignyi is native to the Río de la Plata drainage including the Paraguay, Paraná, and Uruguay Rivers — a system characterised by warm, moderately turbid water with a rich organic substrate. It is a mid-sized doradid reaching around 40 cm, with particularly prominent and sharp lateral scutes and a gently arching dorsal profile. Its colouration is understated — warm brown with subtle reticulation — but its body form is elegant and distinctive.

In the aquarium, R. dorbignyi follows the typical doradid template: peaceful, nocturnal, omnivorous, and vocal. It appreciates fine sand into which it partially buries during daylight hours. It is a robust fish not particularly sensitive to water quality within its tropical parameter range, making husbandry relatively straightforward. Like all doradids, it handles poorly — its scutes are extremely sharp and the pectoral spines lock into an extended position that makes extraction from nets hazardous.

This species occasionally appears in South American import shipments and is generally sold at reasonable prices. It is an excellent choice for keepers seeking a large, peaceful, interesting South American catfish that does not require public-aquarium-scale infrastructure.

Care Guide

Water: 20–27°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard; tolerant of typical South American parameters. Tank: 500 L minimum; fine sand; large smooth caves; subdued lighting. Feeding: Sinking pellets, earthworms, frozen invertebrates, blanched greens; omnivorous and easy. Breeding: Not documented in home aquaria. Compatibility: Peaceful; suitable with large South American cichlids, large tetras, and similar species.
