Laetacara dorsigera
Origin: Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay (Paraná and Paraguay basins)
Laetacara dorsigera is a charming small cichlid from the Paraná and Paraguay basins featuring a rosy-pink belly that deepens to vivid red during spawning and a distinctive dark dorsal-fin spot. At just 8cm maximum, it is one of the smaller laetacara species and suits medium-sized planted community tanks well. An open-water spawner where both parents share brood-care duties devotedly.
Keep as a pair or small group in a planted aquarium. Feed varied omnivore diet: quality pellets, small live foods, frozen artemia and bloodworms. Moderately soft, neutral water preferred. Relatively peaceful — can be housed in community tanks with other small, non-aggressive species. Parents guard eggs and fry closely — remove aggressive tank mates during breeding.
