Betta splendens
Also known as: Double Tail Betta, DT Betta, Twin-tail Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
The double tail mutation causes the caudal peduncle to bifurcate, resulting in two distinct tail lobes and a shorter, deeper body than single-tail varieties. Double tail bettas also tend to have wider dorsal fins. While beautiful, the genetic trait is sometimes associated with swim bladder complications, so careful care is advised.
Water: 26-28°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — pristine water quality is especially important. Tank: minimum 20L, low-flow filtration; avoid strong currents that stress the unusual body shape. Feeding: carnivore — small betta pellets, bloodworm, daphnia; avoid overfeeding to prevent bloat. Behaviour: males aggressive to conspecifics — one per tank; tends to be slightly less active than other varieties. Compatibility: gentle community tank mates; not suitable with nippy fish.
