Gobioides broussonnetii
Also known as: Dragon Goby, Violet Goby, Dragon Fish
Origin: Caribbean, Central America, Gulf of Mexico
Gobioides broussonnetii is a highly elongated, eel-like goby native to Caribbean and Central American coastal estuaries and tidal rivers. Its large mouth and lizard-like appearance suggest a fierce predator, but it feeds primarily by sifting sand and scraping algae. It can reach 60 cm in captivity and requires a very large tank with deep, soft substrate.
Water: 24–28 °C, pH 7.5–8.5, specific gravity 1.005–1.015; stable brackish conditions. Tank: 300 L minimum; very deep, soft sandy substrate at least 10 cm deep for burrowing. Feeding: Primarily algae, detritus, and small invertebrates; accepts algae wafers, pellets, and frozen bloodworm. Behaviour: Peaceful despite appearance; burrowing and benthic; may uproot plants. Compatibility: Peaceful with fish too large to compete with for substrate territory; avoids confrontation.
