Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Dragon Head Guppy, Dragon Scale Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (Asian lineage)
The Dragon Head Guppy is a newer fancy strain developed by Asian breeders, featuring the 'dragon scale' genetic trait that causes scales to thicken and develop metallic, interlocking armour-like edges across the entire body. This produces a fish that appears almost entirely covered in glistening metallic scales with intense reflectivity.
The dragon scale gene can come in various base colours — gold, blue, green, or red — and is always paired with a large ornate delta tail. Quality specimens display consistent scale coverage without gaps or irregular patches.
This strain requires stable, warm, hard water and a protein-rich diet to maintain its spectacular scale condition.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, hard water (GH 10–20) important for scale integrity. Tank: 60 L minimum; avoid very sharp decor that could snag scales; moderate planting. Feeding: High-quality protein-rich flake and pellets; supplement with live Artemia and Daphnia. Breeding: Somewhat demanding to breed true; select only fish with complete scale coverage. Compatibility: Peaceful; keep with non-aggressive fish that will not nip at the elaborate scaling.
