Betta splendens
Also known as: Dragon Scale Betta, Dragon Betta, Armour Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
Dragon scale bettas carry a genetic trait that causes an overexpression of iridescent metallic scales, particularly on the body, which appear as overlapping, armour-like plates. While extremely eye-catching, keepers should note that the dragon scale gene can occasionally affect the eyes over time, requiring monitoring. Available in virtually every colour and fin type.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — regular water changes reduce scale infection risk. Tank: minimum 20L, planted; monitor eyes closely as dragon scale gene may affect eyesight with age. Feeding: betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; two feedings daily. Behaviour: males aggressive to conspecifics — one per tank at all times. Compatibility: peaceful community tanks are fine; avoid fin-nippers.
