Tetraodon duboisi
Also known as: Dubois' Puffer, Tanganyika Puffer
Origin: Lake Tanganyika, East Africa
Tetraodon duboisi is one of very few puffers adapted to the extreme alkalinity and hardness of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. Its cream body is densely covered in small dark spots and it occupies rocky shoreline habitats in nature. Its water chemistry requirements are entirely opposite to most freshwater puffers, making it a highly specialist species for experienced Tanganyika aquarists.
Water: 24–26°C, pH 7.5–9.0, hard and alkaline (GH 15–25); Lake Tanganyika conditions are essential. Tank: Minimum 100 L; limestone rock piles, coral sand substrate, and good water circulation. Feeding: Snails, mussels, cockles, and frozen invertebrates; hard-shelled foods are critical. Behaviour: Aggressive and highly territorial; will harass any tank inhabitant including cichlids. Compatibility: Species-only; may be attempted with very fast, robust Tanganyika cichlids in expert hands only.
