Betta splendens
Also known as: Dumbo Ear Betta, Elephant Ear Betta, Big Ear Betta
Origin: Southeast Asia
The dumbo ear betta was developed through selective breeding for enlarged pectoral fins, which fan outward in flowing, wing-like extensions. This gives the fish an ethereal, floating appearance in the water. The oversized pectorals require clean, gentle-flow conditions to remain in good health.
Water: 26-30°C, pH 6.0-7.5, soft to medium hardness — low flow protects the large pectoral fins. Tank: minimum 20L, gentle sponge filter preferred; avoid sharp decor that could damage the fins. Feeding: betta pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp; feed small amounts twice daily. Behaviour: males are territorial — one per tank; otherwise docile and graceful swimmers. Compatibility: very peaceful with community fish; avoid nippy species near the enlarged pectorals.
