Poecilia reticulata var.
Also known as: Dumbo Ear Guppy, Big Ear Guppy, Elephant Ear Guppy
Origin: Captive bred (Asian lineage)
The Dumbo Ear Guppy, also known as the Big Ear Guppy, carries a mutation that dramatically enlarges the pectoral fins into broad, ear-like appendages. When combined with the vivid red colouration of the Red strain, the result is one of the most distinctive and conversation-starting guppies in the hobby.
Males display these enlarged pectorals prominently during courtship displays, fanning them out to impress females. The mutation does not appear to impair swimming but requires an aquarium free from fin-nipping species that might target the exposed pectoral fins.
This strain is best appreciated in a species tank or with very gentle, small companions to protect the delicate extended pectorals.
Water: 22–28 °C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard; avoid large pH swings. Tank: 60 L minimum; no sharp decor; gentle current; floating plants for shelter. Feeding: Varied flake, micro-pellet, and live/frozen food; feed small portions 2–3 times daily. Breeding: Prolific; Dumbo trait is recessive; pair Dumbo to Dumbo for consistent ear expression in fry. Compatibility: Species tank strongly recommended; any fin-nipper will damage the large pectorals.
