Rhinogobius duospilus
Also known as: Duospilus Rhinogobius, Hong Kong Goby, Red-spot Stream Goby
Origin: Hong Kong, Pearl River delta, southern China
Rhinogobius duospilus is one of the most readily available and beginner-friendly Rhinogobius species in the hobby. Native to clear, fast-moving streams around Hong Kong and the Pearl River delta of southern China, males are adorned with rows of bright red-orange spots along the flanks, vivid orange facial markings, and iridescent blue cheek patches. Females are plainer but still attractively patterned with soft brown marbling. This species is notably hardy compared to many Rhinogobius and adapts well to aquarium conditions provided water is cool, well-oxygenated, and clean. It is a benthic predator, hunting small invertebrates among the gravel, and will readily accept frozen and live foods in captivity. Males defend small territories but coexist reasonably peacefully in a spacious tank.
Water: 18–24 °C, pH 7.0–7.8, GH 5–15, KH 3–10; tolerates a range of hardness but needs good oxygenation. Tank: 60 L minimum; smooth river pebbles, sand, and flat stones; moderate to strong flow. Feeding: Carnivore; frozen bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp, and small pellets; feed twice daily in small portions. Breeding: Cave spawner; male guards eggs under flat stone; larvae are amphidromous and not easily raised. Compatibility: Peaceful with most non-bottom-dwelling species; may spar with conspecific males.
