Badis badis
Also known as: Dwarf Chameleon Fish, Badis, Perch Badis
Origin: South Asia (India, Nepal, Bangladesh — slow-moving streams and ponds)

Badis badis, commonly called the Dwarf Badis or Chameleon Fish, is a small but complex and fascinating freshwater fish from India, Nepal, and Bangladesh, inhabiting slow-moving and still, heavily vegetated ponds, ditches, and streams. It belongs to the family Badidae — a small group of perciform fish superficially resembling small cichlids in both appearance and behaviour.
The most striking characteristic of B. badis is its remarkable ability to change colour — earning the 'Chameleon Fish' name. At rest or stressed, individuals appear a dull grey-brown. When active, displaying, or in excellent condition, males transform into vivid patterns of deep blue, orange, red, and black — the colour pattern varying by mood, health, and competitive state. No two individuals display identical patterns, and the same individual may show dramatically different colouration within minutes.
Badis badis is a slow, deliberate predator that stalks small invertebrates with characteristic body swaying before striking. It relies primarily on live and frozen micro foods in captivity — most individuals refuse dry foods, and some accept pellets only after extended conditioning.
It is a sexually dimorphic species — males are more colourful and develop more distinctly patterned finnage, while females are plainer with a rounder body. Males are territorial toward each other, requiring adequate space and visual barriers.
Tank Setup: A 20–40 litre heavily planted nano tank for a small group. Extremely dense planting with fine-leaved and broad-leaved plants, driftwood caves, and multiple visual barriers. Very gentle sponge filtration. Dim to moderate lighting. Cool water — no heater needed in most Belgian homes.
Water Parameters: Temperature 15–24°C; pH 6.5–7.5; GH 5–15 °dH; KH 2–8 °dH. Prefers cool water significantly — ideal at 18–22°C. Cannot be kept in warm tropical setups.
Feeding: Carnivore micro-predator. Feed live and frozen: baby brine shrimp, Daphnia, micro worms, small bloodworm, Cyclops. Many individuals refuse dry foods. Target-feed shy individuals. Feed once to twice daily.
Tank Mates: Only peaceful nano species that prefer similar cool water: White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Celestial Pearl Danios, Pygmy Corydoras (in compatible temperatures). Avoid competitive feeders and fish that will intimidate the slow-moving Badis.
Behaviour: Slow, methodical predator. Males are territorial and display to each other with vivid colour patterns. Highly solitary ambush predators when hunting. Can be kept as a pair or one male with two females.
Health: Hardy when kept cool with appropriate live foods. Main risks are overheating and dietary insufficiency from dry-food-only feeding. Cool water (18–22°C) and live/frozen foods ensure excellent health.
