Biotoecus opercularis
Also known as: Dwarf Flag Cichlid, Opercularis Cichlid, Biotoecus
Origin: South America
Biotoecus opercularis is one of the smallest cichlids in South America, reaching only about 5cm in length. Despite its diminutive size it is a highly interesting species with fascinating breeding behaviour and bold coloration for its size. It inhabits soft, slightly acidic waters of the Amazon and Orinoco drainages and is best kept by experienced softwater cichlid hobbyists.
Water: 25-29°C, pH 5.0-6.5, soft (GH 1-5); clean, stable water essential. Tank: 40L minimum, sand substrate, leaf litter, micro-caves, dense planting. Feeding: omnivore — micro live/frozen foods (nauplii, micro-Daphnia); micro-pellets. Behaviour: small territorial footprint; peaceful; pairs or small trios. Compatibility: micro species tank or with very small tetras; avoid larger tankmates.
