About

Trichogaster lalius, the Dwarf Gourami, is one of the most recognisable and frequently kept small labyrinth fish in the aquarium hobby. Native to the slow-moving rivers, ponds, and rice paddies of the Bengal region of India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, it has been kept in aquariums for over a century and is available in numerous selectively bred colour strains.

Male Dwarf Gouramis in the wild-type form are stunning: vivid red-orange and blue alternating diagonal stripes cross the body and fins, creating one of the most eye-catching colour schemes of any small aquarium fish. Popular colour variants include the 'Flame' (deep red to orange-red with blue dorsal fin), 'Powder Blue' (uniform blue to powder blue), and 'Neon Blue' (intense blue) strains — all sharing the characteristic gourami body shape and temperament.

Dwarf Gouramis are labyrinth fish, equipped with the specialised labyrinth organ that allows them to breathe atmospheric oxygen directly from the air surface. Males build elaborate bubble nests at the water surface, incorporating plant material into the nest structure, and guard the eggs and early fry.

A significant health concern exists with commercially bred Dwarf Gouramis: Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV), a viral disease that causes swelling, colour loss, and eventual death, is widespread in imported specimens from Southeast Asian fish farms. Buying from reputable suppliers with good stock turnover reduces (though does not eliminate) this risk. There is no treatment for DGIV.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A minimum 60-litre planted aquarium. Dense surface planting (floating plants) for bubble nest building, broad-leaved plants for shelter, driftwood, and gentle filtration — Dwarf Gouramis cannot tolerate strong water flow. The tank must have a tight lid with small air gap above the water for the labyrinth organ.

Water Parameters: Temperature 24–28°C; pH 6.0–7.5; GH 3–15 °dH; KH 2–8 °dH. Moderately soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water. Avoid cold temperatures below 22°C — the labyrinth organ is damaged by cold air above the water.

Feeding: Omnivore. Feed high-quality flake, small pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and blanched vegetables. Feed twice daily. Accepts surface and mid-water food eagerly.

Tank Mates: Peaceful with most small to medium community fish: tetras, rasboras, corydoras, livebearers, and small barbs. Keep one male per tank unless the tank is very large. Avoid fin-nippers and large aggressive species.

Behaviour: Males build floating bubble nests and court females. After spawning, males guard the nest aggressively — females should be removed after egg deposition to prevent harassment. A single male in a community tank is the standard recommendation.

Health: Susceptible to Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV) — no treatment, buy from reputable sources. Also prone to bacterial infections and velvet in poor water conditions. Pristine water quality is the primary preventive measure.
