About

The Blue Neon Dwarf Gourami is a selectively bred colour variant of Trichogaster lalius, the standard Dwarf Gourami. Through selective breeding, this strain has intensified the blue elements of the wild-type Dwarf Gourami's striped pattern into a nearly uniform electric or neon blue colouration that covers most of the body and fins. The remaining red-orange elements of the wild-type are largely suppressed, resulting in a fish that displays primarily vivid blue tones.

In peak condition under appropriate lighting, the Blue Neon Dwarf Gourami shimmers with an extraordinary metallic-electric blue that makes it one of the most visually striking small labyrinth fish available. Different individuals and lighting conditions produce variations from powder blue to intense neon blue.

All care requirements are identical to the standard Dwarf Gourami: the same water chemistry, temperature, tank setup, compatible tank mates, feeding, and health concerns apply. The species' primary health challenge — Dwarf Gourami Iridovirus (DGIV) — affects this strain equally, so purchasing from reputable suppliers with healthy-looking, active stock is important.

The Blue Neon Dwarf Gourami makes a spectacular centrepiece for smaller planted aquariums — a single male in a 60-litre planted tank with a backdrop of green plants creates a beautiful focal point.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: Identical to standard Dwarf Gourami. Minimum 60-litre planted aquarium with floating plants for surface cover and bubble nest building, broad-leaved plants for shelter, very gentle filtration, and a tight-fitting lid. Avoid strong water flow — labyrinth fish prefer calm conditions.

Water Parameters: Temperature 24–28°C; pH 6.0–7.5; GH 3–15 °dH; KH 2–8 °dH. Moderately soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water. Keep warm — avoid temperatures below 22°C.

Feeding: Omnivore. High-quality flake, small pellets, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia. Feed twice daily. Surface and mid-water feeder.

Tank Mates: Peaceful with most small to medium community fish: tetras, rasboras, corydoras, livebearers, small barbs. One male per tank recommended. Avoid fin-nippers and aggressive species.

Behaviour: Males build bubble nests at the surface and court females vigorously. Remove females after spawning to prevent male harassment. The labyrinth organ requires access to warm surface air.

Health: Same as standard Dwarf Gourami — susceptible to DGIV (no treatment), bacterial infections, and velvet. Buy from reputable sources. Maintain pristine water quality.
