Mormyrus caballus
Also known as: Dwarf Mormyrid, Caballus Mormyrid
Origin: Africa
Mormyrus caballus is native to the Congo River and associated waterways of Central Africa and remains one of the less commonly imported mormyrid species. Its modest size and less extreme snout morphology compared to Campylomormyrus relatives make it somewhat more manageable. Like all mormyrids it produces weak electric organ discharges used for navigation and social communication.
Water: 23-27°C, pH 6.0-7.0, soft to slightly hard, good oxygenation. Tank: Minimum 120L, densely planted or driftwood, dim lighting, dark fine substrate. Feeding: Carnivore; live Tubifex worm and frozen bloodworm; probes substrate for small invertebrates. Behaviour: Generally peaceful; shy and nocturnal; keep singly or monitor carefully in groups. Compatibility: Small to medium peaceful African fish; avoid boisterous or fin-nipping species.
