About

Carinotetraodon travancoricus, the Dwarf Pea Puffer, is the smallest pufferfish species in the world and one of the most popular freshwater puffers in the aquarium hobby. Endemic to the rivers of Kerala in southwestern India — particularly the Pamba and Chalakudy river systems — it is listed as Vulnerable due to restricted range and collection pressure.

At a maximum size of just 2.5 cm, the Pea Puffer punches far above its weight in personality and character. The vivid yellow-olive to green body covered in dark brown to black spots, round body with large eyes, and remarkable ability to rotate the eyes independently create an appearance of intelligence that is unusual in small fish — and not misplaced. Pea Puffers actively investigate their environment, recognise their keepers, and display individual personalities that endear them to their owners.

Pea Puffers are carnivores and dedicated snail predators — they use their powerful beak-like teeth (fused dental plates) to crush snail shells and extract the meat. This makes them outstanding natural pest snail controllers. In tanks lacking snails, they require regular feeding of appropriate meaty foods.

The Dwarf Pea Puffer is technically a freshwater species that does not require brackish conditions (unlike many other freshwater puffers). It is the most practical puffer for planted freshwater aquariums. However, males are territorial and semi-aggressive toward each other, and the species can nip the fins of other fish — making community tank compatibility limited.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: A minimum 30 litres for a small group of three to four (or one male per 15–20 litres minimum). Dense planting — Pea Puffers feel most secure and display best colouration in heavily planted tanks with many visual barriers, hiding spots, and hunting grounds. Fine substrate, driftwood, moss, and floating plants.

Water Parameters: Temperature 22–28°C; pH 6.5–8.0; GH 5–15 °dH; KH 3–10 °dH. Adaptable and does not require brackish water. Standard moderately hard neutral water works well.

Feeding: Carnivore. Primary diet of live or frozen snails (Ramshorn, Bladder snails — maintain a breeding colony), frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and small worms. Snails are critical for dental health — the beak grows continuously and snail shells help wear it down. Feed daily.

Tank Mates: Best as a species-only tank. In large, heavily planted tanks, can be kept with fast-moving, upper-water species that avoid the substrate: danios, small tetras. Avoid slow, fin-bearing fish, shrimp (will be eaten), and any fish that can be cornered. Monitor constantly for fin-nipping.

Behaviour: Intelligent and curious. Males territorial toward each other — maintain one male per territory zone. Females are more tolerant of each other. Actively hunts snails and investigates every corner of the tank.

Health: Hardy when fed appropriately. Overgrown beaks are the most common health issue — caused by insufficient hard-shelled prey. Snails must be a regular part of the diet. Sensitive to poor water quality.
