Synodontis lucipinnis
Also known as: Dwarf Petricola, Dwarf Synodontis, Lucy's Synodontis
Origin: East Africa (Lake Tanganyika — endemic rocky shores)
Synodontis lucipinnis, the Dwarf Petricola or Lucy's Synodontis, is a small and attractive Synodontis catfish endemic to the rocky shores of Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. It is closely related to Synodontis petricola (also commonly called Dwarf Petricola) — so closely that the two were only formally separated as distinct species relatively recently — and the two are often sold interchangeably in the aquarium trade.
Both S. lucipinnis and S. petricola are commonly referred to as 'Dwarf Petricola' and display very similar spotted patterns: a pale grey to cream body densely covered in small dark brown to black spots, with a white-tipped dorsal fin and similarly patterned caudal fin. The spotted pattern is attractive and provides effective camouflage among the rocky substrate of Lake Tanganyika.
Synodontis catfish are famous for their upside-down swimming behaviour — they frequently swim and rest with their bellies uppermost, a characteristic of the genus. In Synodontis nigriventris (the Common Upside-Down Catfish), this is constant, but in S. lucipinnis/petricola, upside-down swimming is observed intermittently rather than as a constant posture.
The Dwarf Petricola is relatively small for a Synodontis, reaching approximately 10 cm, and is compatible with most medium community fish. In Lake Tanganyika aquarium setups, it fills the important bottom-cleaning niche alongside rockwork-dwelling cichlids.
Tank Setup: A minimum 100-litre aquarium. Provide smooth rocks, caves (PVC tubes, ceramic caves), and open sandy substrate areas. In Tanganyikan setups, dense rock piling is ideal. Good filtration and oxygenation. Dimmer lighting suits this primarily nocturnal species.
Water Parameters: Temperature 24–28°C; pH 7.5–9.0; GH 10–20 °dH; KH 8–15 °dH. In Tanganyikan setups: hard, alkaline water. Also adaptable to standard moderately hard community water (pH 7.0–7.8), making it usable in non-Tanganyikan setups.
Feeding: Omnivore. Sinking pellets, catfish wafers, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, Tubifex, and blanched vegetables. Feed in the evening when active. Bottom-dwelling scavenger that clears leftover food efficiently.
Tank Mates: Excellent community catfish. Compatible with Tanganyikan cichlids (ideal setup), general community medium fish, other Synodontis, corydoras, and most peaceful medium to large fish. Avoid very small fish that may be eaten.
Behaviour: Primarily nocturnal. Becomes active at dusk, spending daylight hours hidden in caves. Intermittent upside-down swimming is normal. Not aggressive but may guard cave territories from other catfish.
Health: Hardy and robust. Susceptible to lateral line disease from poor water quality. Weekly 25% water changes maintain health. Avoid copper-based medications.
