Melanotaenia maccullochi
Also known as: Dwarf Rainbowfish, McCulloch's Rainbowfish
Origin: Australia (Cape York Peninsula)
Melanotaenia maccullochi is native to the streams and swamps of Cape York Peninsula in far north Queensland, where it inhabits shallow, often heavily vegetated water. It is one of the hardiest and smallest of all the Australian rainbowfish, making it an excellent choice for keepers with limited tank space who still want the classic rainbowfish look.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard water. Tank: 80 L+, planted aquarium with some open swimming areas. Feeding: Omnivore; small-grade flakes, micro-pellets, and frozen baby brine shrimp. Behaviour: Active, peaceful schooling fish; ideal for smaller community setups. Compatibility: Excellent with other small peaceful fish; avoid very large or boisterous tankmates.
