Chiloglanis sp.
Also known as: Dwarf Suckermouth Mochokid, African Suckercat
Origin: Africa (various stream localities)
This undescribed Chiloglanis species is one of several torrent mochokids entering the trade under trade names without formal scientific description, collected from various African fast-flowing stream localities. It shares the defining Chiloglanis characteristics of a modified suckermouth for rock adhesion and a strongly rheophilic ecology demanding very high flow and dissolved oxygen.
In the aquarium it requires identical conditions to other Chiloglanis: powerful circulation, smooth rocks, cool, oxygen-rich water and a diet of algae-based foods supplemented with blanched vegetables. It is a peaceful, active grazer that rarely disturbs tankmates.
Given its undescribed status, buyers should source only responsibly collected specimens and prioritise captive-raised fish whenever available.
Water: 20–26°C, pH 6.5–7.5, soft to moderately hard (GH 4–14, KH 2–8); maximum oxygenation required. Tank: 60 L minimum; smooth rocks; very high flow pumps; minimal silting substrate. Feeding: Algae wafers, spirulina tabs, blanched courgette and spinach; continuous grazer. Breeding: Not documented; presumed egg depositor on hard surfaces. Compatibility: Peaceful with other rheophilic species; not suitable for standard community aquariums.
