Dwarf Upside-Down Catfish

Synodontis petricola is a compact, peaceful mochokid endemic to Lake Tanganyika, frequently confused in trade with the larger S. multipunctatus but distinguished by its smaller adult size and more intensely spotted juvenile pattern. It is an active species that ventures throughout the water column, often resting inverted under flat rocks or broad-leaved aquatic plants in the manner typical of the genus.

In the aquarium it is hardy and tolerant of a wide pH range, though it does best in the moderately hard, slightly alkaline conditions that match its native rift-lake habitat. It is social and more confident when kept in groups of four or more, displaying interesting interaction and occasional mild sparring that is rarely injurious.

This species is among the most regularly captive-bred Synodontis, making tank-raised specimens frequently available; these tend to be hardier and more adaptable than wild-caught fish.

Water: 23–27°C, pH 7.5–9.0, moderately hard (GH 8–18, KH 4–12); stable parameters important for long-term health. Tank: 120 L minimum for a group; rocky caves and flat stones; broadleaf plants or driftwood for resting under. Feeding: Sinking catfish pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and daphnia; accepts most prepared foods readily. Breeding: Egg scatterer in caves; parents do not guard eggs; remove eggs to a separate fry tank for best results. Compatibility: Peaceful with Tanganyikan cichlids and most community fish; avoid very aggressive or nippy tankmates.
