About

Synodontis petricola, the Dwarf Upside-Down Catfish or Petricola Synodontis, is a small and fascinating catfish endemic to Lake Tanganyika in East Africa. It is most famous in the scientific community for a remarkable and unique reproductive strategy: brood parasitism on mouthbrooding cichlids. Females synchronise their spawning with the spawning of mouthbrooding cichlid species — depositing their eggs in the same spot as the cichlid is picking up her own eggs. The cichlid inadvertently incubates both her own eggs and those of the Synodontis in her mouth. The catfish eggs hatch first and the fry, being larger than the cichlid larvae, may consume the cichlid's offspring within the mouth — a behaviour directly analogous to the Common Cuckoo's egg-dumping strategy.

Aside from this extraordinary biology, S. petricola is an attractive and practical aquarium fish. The spotted cream-to-grey body with dense dark spots and distinctive white fin margins create a handsome appearance. It reaches approximately 10–12 cm — manageable for most community setups.

Note: S. petricola and S. lucipinnis are very closely related and frequently confused or sold interchangeably in the trade. Both have identical care requirements and similar appearances — the 'Dwarf Petricola' name is applied to both.

In Tanganyikan cichlid aquariums, the Petricola Synodontis fills the essential bottom-cleaning ecological niche, scavenging uneaten food and biofilm from the rocky substrate.

Care Guide

Tank Setup: Minimum 100-litre aquarium. Smooth rocks, caves, and rocky substrate in a Tanganyikan setup, or standard community decor in a general setup. Good filtration. Dim lighting accommodates nocturnal activity.

Water Parameters: Temperature 24–28°C; pH 7.5–9.0; GH 10–20 °dH; KH 8–15 °dH. Ideally hard, alkaline Tanganyikan water. Also tolerates standard moderately hard community water (pH 7.0–7.8).

Feeding: Omnivore. Sinking pellets, catfish wafers, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp, Daphnia, and blanched vegetables. Feed in the evening. Efficient scavenger that cleans up uneaten food.

Tank Mates: Compatible with Tanganyikan cichlids and general community fish. Avoid very small fish that may be consumed at night. Best kept in groups of 3–6.

Behaviour: Nocturnal, hiding during daylight in caves and under rocks. Active and visible from dusk onward. Intermittent upside-down swimming is normal for this genus. Fascinating brood parasite in Tanganyikan mouthbrooder setups.

Health: Hardy. Sensitive to poor water quality. Weekly 25% water changes. Copper-based medications are lethal — avoid.
