Synodontis afrofischeri
Also known as: East African Squeaker, Fischer's Synodontis
Origin: East Africa
Synodontis afrofischeri is a medium to large Synodontis from the East African river systems draining into Lake Victoria and the Rift Valley, a hardy and adaptable species well suited to the moderately hard, slightly alkaline conditions typical of East African community aquariums. It bears an attractive pattern of irregular dark spots on a pale grey-brown body that persists into adulthood.
In captivity it is more active during the day than many Synodontis, particularly if adequate shelters are provided that give it the confidence to venture into open water. It is a bold feeder and will quickly learn to associate the aquarist's presence with food.
This species coexists well with medium and large East African cichlids, catfish and robust community fish, making it a useful and visually appealing addition to the bottom zone of large African community setups.
Water: 22–27°C, pH 7.0–8.0, moderately hard (GH 8–18, KH 4–10). Tank: 200 L minimum; rock caves and driftwood; sandy substrate preferred; good filtration essential. Feeding: Sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and prawn; accepts most prepared foods. Breeding: Cave spawner; rarely documented in home aquariums. Compatibility: Peaceful with medium to large cichlids and catfish; avoid small fish that could be eaten.
