Sandelia bainsii
Also known as: Eastern Cape Rocky, Bain's Rocky
Origin: South Africa
Sandelia bainsii is a critically endangered labyrinth fish endemic to the rocky streams of South Africa's Eastern Cape province. Unlike most anabantoids, it requires cooler water temperatures and thrives in well-oxygenated, flowing water. It is an important conservation species and captive breeding efforts are critical to its survival.
Water: temp 16–22°C, pH 6.5–7.5, clean, well-oxygenated water essential. Tank: minimum 120L; rocky décor mimicking natural habitat; strong filtration with moderate flow. Feeding: omnivore — quality pellets, live invertebrates, earthworms, insect larvae. Behaviour: territorial and semi-aggressive, particularly between males. Compatibility: keep with other coolwater, robust species; ideally in a species-only setup.
