Origin: Australia (eastern Queensland)
Melanotaenia splendida is the most widely distributed rainbowfish in Australia, found across eastern Queensland and into New Guinea. Multiple subspecies exist, each with distinct regional colouration. Males develop a deep, arched body profile and brilliant scale iridescence with age. A robust, easy-care species ideal for rainbowfish beginners.
Water: 22–28°C, pH 6.5–8.0, soft to moderately hard. Tank: 120 L+, open swimming space with planted margins. Feeding: Omnivore; flakes, pellets, and frozen/live foods readily accepted. Behaviour: Active, peaceful, lively schooling fish; males display continuously. Compatibility: Excellent community fish; compatible with a wide range of similarly sized species.
