Melanotaenia splendida splendida
Origin: Queensland, Australia (rivers and streams)
The Eastern Rainbowfish is the nominate subspecies of Melanotaenia splendida, found in Queensland's rivers and streams, displaying iridescent blue-green flanks with a mid-body stripe. Males put on dazzling colour displays when competing for females, making a group an entertaining sight. Adaptable and peaceful, integrating well into community tanks.
Keep in groups of 6+, ideally with more females than males. Provide a long tank with open swimming space and planted areas. Feed quality flake, frozen artemia, and small insects. Males colour up brilliantly when competing. Tolerates a wide range of water conditions. A rewarding and active community rainbowfish.
