Betta edithae
Origin: West Kalimantan, Borneo (Kapuas River system)
Betta edithae is a rare mouthbrooding species from the Kapuas river system in West Kalimantan, Borneo, inhabiting soft blackwater forest streams. It has a slender body with attractive brown and green iridescence and distinctive scale patterning. The male holds the eggs in his mouth for up to three weeks. Seldom seen in the hobby — a prized find for wild betta collectors.
Requires very soft, acidic blackwater conditions with peat or Indian almond leaf tannins. Keep as a pair in a well-planted species tank. Feed live and frozen meaty foods: bloodworms, artemia, daphnia. During mouthbrooding, do not disturb the male — separate if female is harassed. Advanced due to specific water requirement and rarity.
