Pangio anguillaris
Also known as: Eel Kuhli Loach, Eel Loach
Origin: Borneo
Pangio anguillaris is among the most elongated of the kuhli-type loaches, earning the common name Eel Kuhli Loach through its particularly sinuous, moray-like body plan. Native to lowland streams and peat swamps of Borneo, it inhabits slow-moving, tannin-stained water with soft, muddy substrates and dense root tangles.
In the aquarium, Pangio anguillaris is a calm and undemanding species that coexists peacefully with virtually any non-predatory tankmate. It is a dedicated burrower and may disappear entirely into a deep soft substrate for days at a time. This behaviour is entirely natural and no cause for concern. A group of six or more ensures the fish feel secure and emerge more frequently to forage.
Soft, slightly acidic water is important for this Bornean species. Feeding relies on sinking micro foods: bloodworm, daphnia, and high-quality pellets are all accepted. Its unusual body shape and peaceful nature make it a fascinating and distinctive addition to Borneo-themed biotope aquaria.
Water: pH 5.5–7.0, temperature 24–29°C, soft and acidic; blackwater conditions ideal. Tank: 60 L minimum; very fine sand for deep burrowing, leaf litter, driftwood, secure lid. Feeding: Sinking micro pellets, frozen bloodworm, daphnia; scavenges substrate actively. Breeding: Not documented in captivity. Compatibility: Peaceful; excellent with other Borneo species — rasboras, chocolate gouramis, small barbs.
