Serrasalmus eigenmanni
Also known as: Eigenmanni Piranha, Eigenmann's Piranha
Origin: Guianas and lower Amazon, South America
Serrasalmus eigenmanni is named for the pioneering ichthyologist Carl H. Eigenmann and inhabits river systems of the Guiana Shield and lower Amazon. It presents a relatively understated colour scheme of silver-grey flanks with a faintly reddish lower body and the characteristic red iris of the genus.
While not as dramatically coloured as S. geryi or S. altuvei, it offers a streamlined, classically proportioned piranha for keepers who appreciate the genus for its biology rather than solely for spectacle. It is periodically available from Guiana Shield exporters and tolerates standard Serrasalmus husbandry well.
