Electric Blue Hap

Sciaenochromis fryeri is a piscivorous haplochromine cichlid from Lake Malawi that has become one of the most popular African cichlids globally. Dominant males develop an electrifying, uniform neon-blue colouration from nose to tail. In the wild, it specialises in hunting juvenile mbuna, so it should be kept away from small fish in the aquarium.

Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline; pristine water is key for blue intensity. Tank: 300L minimum; open swimming space with rocky background for territories. Feeding: High-protein diet: quality pellets, krill, whitebait; avoid plant-heavy foods. Behaviour: Males aggressive with rivals; keep one male to multiple females. Compatibility: Keep with larger haps; do not house with small fish or invertebrates.
