Labidochromis caeruleus
Also known as: Electric Yellow Cichlid, Yellow Lab, Lemon Yellow Lab
Origin: Lake Malawi, Africa
Labidochromis caeruleus is arguably the most popular mbuna in the aquarium hobby, prized for its brilliant yellow colouration and relatively peaceful disposition compared to most Malawi cichlids. It inhabits rocky shores throughout Lake Malawi, feeding on invertebrates among rocks. Its tolerant nature makes it suitable for a wider range of Malawi community setups than most mbuna.
Water: 24-28°C, pH 7.5-8.5, hard alkaline water. Tank: 150L minimum with rocky décor; less demanding than most mbuna. Feeding: Omnivore; quality cichlid pellets, frozen mysis and invertebrates; spirulina. Behaviour: Milder than most mbuna; still territorial during breeding but rarely lethal. Compatibility: One of the few mbuna suitable in mixed hap/peacock tanks; widely compatible.
