About

Labidochromis caeruleus is native to the rocky coastal waters of Lake Malawi in East Africa, where it inhabits the rocky shoreline habitat known as the 'mbuna' zone. Within this zone, it is most commonly found at intermediate to deeper depths feeding on invertebrates picked from rock surfaces and crevices.

The wild form of L. caeruleus is actually a pale blue-white species from which the scientific name ('caeruleus' = sky-blue) derives. The brilliant yellow colour form that dominates the aquarium trade originates from a single population at Lion's Cove on the Malawian coast and was introduced to the hobby in the 1980s, rapidly becoming one of the most popular Malawi cichlids worldwide.

Electric Yellow Labs are moderately sized cichlids reaching about 10 cm. The lemon-yellow body is accented by bold black margins on the dorsal, pelvic, and anal fins, creating a striking contrast. The egg-spots on the anal fin are used in spawning behavior. Males are slightly more vivid in coloration; females may show a slightly more subdued yellow tone.

Compared to most mbuna cichlids, the Electric Yellow Lab is notably peaceful, making it a valuable species in mixed Malawi cichlid aquariums. It is omnivorous with a bias toward invertebrate prey, unlike the more herbivorous mbuna species. This dietary flexibility makes feeding simple and straightforward.

Care Guide

Tank Setup A minimum 150-liter aquarium is needed for a harem group (one male, two to three females). A larger tank of 200+ liters is preferable for a mixed Malawi community. Use crushed coral, aragonite, or a mix of sand and coral gravel as substrate to maintain alkaline pH and hardness. Stack rocks to create caves and crevices for territory and refuge. African Rift Lake setups typically have minimal planting; use hardy Vallisneria if desired.

Water Parameters Maintain temperature 23–28°C, pH 7.5–8.5, GH 10–25, KH 5–15. Lake Malawi water is warm, hard, and alkaline; these conditions are non-negotiable for long-term health. Never let pH drop below 7.5. Perform 25–30% weekly water changes. Use a canister or sump filter rated for the full tank volume.

Feeding Omnivorous; feed quality mbuna cichlid pellets or flakes as the staple. Supplement with frozen brine shrimp, Mysis shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter. Avoid high-protein, exclusively meaty diets, which can cause 'Malawi bloat' — a potentially fatal digestive condition common in many mbuna. Feed twice daily in small portions.

Tankmates One of the best mbuna for mixed communities. Compatible with other relatively peaceful mbuna species, peacock cichlids (Aulonocara), and Rift Lake haplochromines of similar size. Avoid housing with very aggressive mbuna like Melanochromis auratus or Pseudotropheus demasoni. Keep one male per species to prevent aggression, or introduce multiple males simultaneously in a very large tank.

Breeding Maternal mouthbrooder; the female incubates a small clutch of 5–15 eggs in her mouth for 21–28 days. After release, the fry are fully formed miniature versions of the adults. Separate the brooding female or provide refuge if other fish harass her. Fry can be raised on crushed cichlid flake and baby brine shrimp from day one.
